Jim Leuthner has formally announced his candidacy for the St. Louis Park School Board.
Leuthner’s family moved to St. Louis Park because of the school system, he noted. His daughter attended Park Spanish Immersion School and other St. Louis Park schools for all 13 years of her primary and secondary education.
“The family believes she could have not gotten a better education anywhere,” Leuthner said. “This education is serving her very well.”
He added that he believes public schools are essential to a vibrant middle class. He also said the district should encourage more students to seek the opportunities available in the trades.
Leuthner said, “Students can earn while they learn and not get saddled with debt.”
He believes equality regardless of race, financial status and gender identity is critical, he added.
“We need to create avenues for students to excel with their very individual, diverse gifts,” Leuthner said. “We need to eliminate the achievement gap, and students should be able to letter in Community Service.”
Leuthner studied education in graduate school. He served as a teacher and paraprofessional in St. Paul Public Schools. He was on the management committee for Camp Unistar, an adult 4H leader and a camp counselor at a horse camp. He was on the original Capital Region Watershed District Board and said his continuing leadership in the Carpenter’s Union will bring a unique perspective to the board. He is also currently on the St. Louis Park Environment and Sustainability Commission.
